Camp Abilities at Lions Camp Merrick

 Camp Abilities at Lions Camp Merrick is a partnership to combine resources to empower children with sensory impairments to be physically active and productive members of their schools, communities, and society in general. Also, to improve the health and well-being of children with sensory impairments. Camp teaches children what they CAN do in the area of sports and recreation, which is often overlooked in their education and home environments.

 

Camp Abilities at Lions Camp Merrick offers athletes the chance to participate in the following activities:

  • Goalball; Beep Baseball; Martial Arts; Soccer; Swimming; Canoeing; Fishing;  Ropes course; Rock Wall and more.

The camp is owned and operated by the Lions Clubs of District 22-C (Washington D.C. and Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George's and St. Mary counties in Maryland). Monetary support is provided by local Lions Clubs throughout Maryland, Washington D.C., Delaware and Northern Virginia, area businesses and your generous contributions.

Camp Abilities Accomplishments

 

 

CAMP ABILITIES was started in 1996 with the objective to empower children with sensory impairments to be physically active members of their schools, communities, and society.

In 1999
Camp Abilities was recognized as Program of the Year by the Adapted Physical Activity Council of the American Association of Health Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

In 2005
Camp Abilities was recognized as an international leader providing a model for research, professional training, and an opportunity for children with impairments.

 

Camp Abilities has developed as the leading training site for professional development for teaching children sports that are blind all over the world.

Camp Abilities has grown from a local camp for children who are blind and or visually impaired, to an international camp with international campers.

This past summer was
Camp Abilities fourth year in Arizona, Vermont and Alaska.It was the second year for Camp Abilities Puerto Rico and the first year for Camp Abilities in West Chester, PA. One year camps have been held in Colombia, South America, Iowa, Toronto, and Vermont.


The summer of 2008 was the first year for Camp Abilities Maryland at Lions Camp Merrick.
